Question: Pre-diabetes testing?
(Posted by: Wendy B on 2010-03-08 07:02:24)
If I ate a large pasta meal the night before a fasting lab test for glucose would it affect the results? Also do cortisone injections affect glucose levels? |

Elevated Blood Sugar The most common systemic reaction is seen in diabetic patients. Patients with diabetes should carefully monitor their blood sugar as cortisone can cause a temporary rise in their levels. Patients taking insulin should be especially careful, checking their blood sugar often and adjusting the insulin doses, if necessary. diabetes.webmd.com/ blood-glucose |

To answer your first question, no, a meal 8-10 hours before a fasting blood glucose should not affect the results of a non-diabetic. Non-diabetics can handle a glucose load like that without much difficulty and return to pre-meal blood sugar very fast, usually within 2-3 hours. Cortisone shots can affect blood sugar, though. In fact, when researching cortisone injections, every single website said that cortisone can raise blood sugar and that diabetics need to be extra vigilant about monitoring their blood sugar while on this drug. If I were you, I'd ask the doctor to go off the cortisone for a few weeks and then come back after the drug has worked its way out of your system for another fasting lab. |

First Question: Yes, it would be the best thing for you to lay off the soda's because of the amount of sugars that are in the soda's, are actually too much for a Diabetic, because many of our foods have sugars in the ingredients and the carbs as well along with protein carbohydrates into sugar. So just watch the intake of the protien and carbs along with the sugar look on the labels.. Good Luck Second Question: I really don't know about this actual question you should ask your Doctor, before you go to the lab for the blood work. |
